MAX30102 Pulse Oximeter and Heart Rate Sensor Module – I2C Optical Sensor
Product Description
The MAX30102 Pulse Oximeter and Heart Rate Sensor Module is a compact optical sensing solution designed for measuring pulse-related signals and developing heart-rate and SpO2 monitoring projects. It integrates red and infrared LEDs, a photodetector, ambient-light cancellation, and low-noise signal-processing circuitry in a small sensor package.
The MAX30102 uses changes in reflected red and infrared light to detect variations associated with pulsating blood flow. These optical signals can be processed to estimate heart rate and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) in suitable applications.
Communication with a microcontroller is handled through an I2C-compatible digital interface. Programmable LED current and sampling settings allow developers to adjust sensor operation, while the integrated FIFO buffer helps collect measurement data efficiently.
This module is suitable for Arduino, ESP32, and other compatible embedded development platforms with appropriate voltage-level interfacing. It is ideal for DIY electronics, wearable prototypes, fitness-monitoring experiments, and educational biomedical projects.
Note: This is an electronic development module, not a certified medical device. Its readings should not be used for medical diagnosis or treatment.

The operating voltage, board dimensions, and exact I2C pull-up arrangement depend on the breakout-board version. Check the actual module specifications before connecting it.
Pin Connections
Typical MAX30102 breakout boards provide the following connections:
Pin | Function |
VIN / VCC | Module power input (check board voltage requirements) |
GND | Ground |
SDA | I2C data |
SCL | I2C clock |
INT | Interrupt output (if provided) |
I2C Wiring
Connect the module to a compatible microcontroller using the I2C interface:
SDA: Connect to the microcontroller's I2C SDA pin.
SCL: Connect to the microcontroller's I2C SCL pin.
GND: Connect to common ground.
VCC / VIN: Connect to the voltage specified for your breakout board.
INT: Optional interrupt connection, if required by your program.
Important Pull-up Resistor Note
I2C communication requires pull-up resistors on SDA and SCL. Many MAX30102 breakout boards already include onboard pull-ups, so check your board before adding external resistors.
Do not automatically connect SDA and SCL pull-ups to 5V. The MAX30102 IC operates at low voltage, and its I2C pins are not 5V tolerant. Use pull-ups to the appropriate logic voltage supported by the breakout board and connected controller. For bare or 3.3V-only modules, use suitable 3.3V logic-level connections.

Important Notes
Ensure correct power supply and logic-level compatibility before connecting the module.
Check whether the breakout board includes onboard I2C pull-up resistors.
Stable readings depend on sensor placement, skin contact, movement, ambient light, and software processing.
Heart-rate and SpO2 values require suitable signal-processing algorithms and calibration.
